Success Rate Methodologies

Changes to the Learner Responsive success rate methodology

The calculation for Learner Responsive success rates is being changed for 2008/09, as agreed at the recent meeting of the Data Harmonisation Group.

For more information, see our announcement and the Learner Responsive methodology FAQs.

Success rate methodology explained

Qualification Success Rate (QSR) methodologies are the calculations used to assess performance of providers against defined criteria. Put most simply, success rate methodology is as follows:

Numbers of learners actually achieving their qualification
Success rates (%) =           _______________________________________                          x100
Numbers of learners expected to achieve a qualification
                                                               excluding transfers

Detailed definitions can be found in the Data Dictionary on the Data Service website.

Changes to align the data definitions for success and quality are an indication of an overall 'direction of travel' for all the organisations involved in data harmonisation - including the LSC, the BIS, the DCSF and Ofsted - towards greater simplicity and transparency.

We will give further education (FE) and training colleagues advance notice of any changes to success rate methodologies, so that preparation is made for changes that may occur. Any changes will be announced on these pages and communicated widely across the FE and training system.
